Pyrite after Belemnite in matrix

<<< Return to MINERALS
Specimen Code Number: SA032
Learn more about: Pyrite
Mineral and Fossil
Size: Cabinet
11.1x6.6x3.3 cm
Location: Dzheganas River
North Caucasus, Russia
Description: A very large and rare matrix example of this unusual mineral/fossil combination. The tube shaft is what remains of the squid-like cephalopod and is thought to be the counterweight. The pyrite concretion formed at the opening of the creature where the soft parts of the body were. It does not appear to be repaired. The only matrix example that I have encountered. Weight 295 grams.
