Specimen Code Number: DE Acanthite Philips
Learn more about: Acanthite
Acanthite silver ore
with multiple sulfides
Size: Small Cabinet
9.0x7.1x3.0 cm
Location: Granite Mountain Mine,
Philipsburg District,
Granite County, Montana
Description: One side of this specimen shows areas with flattened, massive gray-black acanthite and the other side shows small micro crystals of acanthite (in vuggy areas), along with sphalerite, galena, and quartz. It comes from The Joyce Family Collection of Missoula, MT. Mr. Joyce communicated to me that the piece was one of a couple from The Granite Mountain Mine near Philipsburg, Montana, that a member of the family had mined in the early 1900's. All species show small crystals and are better seen with aid of magnification. A very interesting silver ore sample from the early days of the Philipsburg District.
